On October 16, 2026, Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever announced that the country plans to deliver ten F-16 fighters to Ukraine by the end of the year. This decision comes in response to Ukraine's need for air cover, particularly to protect grain exports in the Black Sea and energy infrastructure.
Reasons for the Fighter Jet Transfer
The Belgian Prime Minister noted that the delay in the transfer of the fighter jets is not due to their actions but is related to delays in the supply of F-35 jets. Belgium must fulfill its obligations to NATO, and the arrival of F-35s allows the country to transfer F-16s to Ukraine. De Wever emphasized that the F-16, equipped with a 20mm cannon, is a crucial asset for defending against aerial threats.
Statements from the President of Ukraine
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed during a press conference in Brussels that Ukraine expects to receive F-16s from Belgium. He noted that Ukraine is already using these fighter jets to combat fast-moving Shahed drones, achieving good results. Zelensky also highlighted the importance of international support, particularly intelligence shared by dozens of countries, including France.
Challenges in Air Defense
Zelensky also pointed out that Ukraine faces a significant shortage of missiles for the Patriot system, as most of them are being redirected to the Middle East. He mentioned that Ukraine receives missiles not only from the United States but also from European countries. The President raised the issue of frozen Russian assets, stating that Ukraine aims to secure these funds before Russia can reclaim them.
