Nepal has completed search and rescue operations following a devastating flood that began on August 26, 2026. According to Reuters, the natural disaster resulted in the deaths of 1,455 people, while at least 5,285 individuals are reported missing.
Rescued and Missing Persons
During the rescue operations, 13,795 people were saved. However, despite the significant number of rescues, the situation regarding the missing persons remains critical. The head of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority of Nepal, Dharam Raj Upreti, announced the cessation of active body recovery efforts.
Causes of the Flood
The flood that struck Nepal may have been triggered by the collapse of a glacier in the Himalayas. However, the exact cause of the collapse is still unknown. This situation has raised considerable concern in the country, as many people have been left homeless and without means of livelihood.
Legal Aspects
The Nepalese government is currently seeking ways to declare the missing persons deceased, allowing their families to finalize insurance and other legal procedures. Earlier, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry reported that among the missing persons in Nepal were 56 Ukrainians, highlighting the international nature of this tragedy.
