Cooperation between Ukraine and Slovakia: new agreements and initiatives

On November 5, 2026, joint consultations of the governments of Ukraine and Slovakia took place in Lviv, during which a Joint Declaration on Cooperation was signed. The meeting was attended by Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Koretskyi and Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico.

Main Agreements and Initiatives

During the meeting, several important agreements were concluded, covering various areas of cooperation:

  • Establishment of bilingual gymnasiums: Ukrainian-English in Slovakia and Slovak-English in Ukraine, with the project set to launch in the next academic year.
  • Transfer of three electric locomotives to Ukrzaliznytsia.
  • Financial assistance: Slovakia will allocate 500,000 euros for energy support, including the purchase of 54 generators, which will arrive in Ukraine by the end of the month.
  • 300,000 euros will be allocated for shelters, and an additional 200,000 euros will be directed towards medical equipment for Ukrainian hospitals.

Cooperation in International Initiatives

Slovakia also announced its intention to become a full member of the International Coalition for the Return of Ukrainian Children. This is an important step towards protecting the rights of children affected by the war.

Additionally, the parties agreed to continue cooperation within the European SAFE instrument, which includes coordinating new joint projects. Prime Minister Koretskyi emphasized the importance of Slovakia's support in opening two negotiation clusters for Ukraine's accession to the European Union.

Regular Meetings and Next Steps

All agreements reached were formalized in a Joint Declaration on Cooperation. The parties plan to hold regular meetings at the ministerial and working group levels to implement these initiatives. In particular, the establishment of a macro-regional EU strategy for the Carpathians is being discussed, which could contribute to the region's development.
