On September 26, 2026, Jonathan McKinsey, a 40-year-old technical director of the games department at The New York Times, was shot dead in California. His body, found with multiple gunshot wounds, was located in the parking lot of a sports complex in Dublin, near San Francisco. Police have arrested Shouyan Zhang and Shili Chen, the 76-year-old parents of McKinsey's wife, on suspicion of murder.

Family Conflicts
Court documents reveal ongoing conflicts within the McKinsey family. Jonathan accused his wife and her parents of harassment due to his transgender transition. In a court statement, he claimed:
- His mother-in-law referred to him and their son as "perverts";
- His father-in-law allegedly struck him in the chest while he was recovering from surgery;
