On October 28, 2026, the Estonian Ministry of Defense announced plans to construct approximately 150 bunkers on the border with Russia. This initiative is part of the Baltic defense line aimed at enhancing the security of the region.
Details of Bunker Construction
The bunkers will be built in the northeastern county of Ida-Viru County, which is a border region. According to the information, 100 bunkers are planned to be located on state land, while about 50 will be on municipal and private properties. Landowners will be involved in negotiations regarding leasing, compensation, or purchasing their land.
Strategic Objectives of the Defense Line
Overall, Estonia aims to construct up to 600 fortified bunkers by the end of 2027. In addition to the bunkers, the plan includes the creation of anti-tank ditches and concrete barriers. These measures are a response to the increasing military potential of Russia at NATO's eastern borders, as recently warned by Lithuanian intelligence.
Risk Assessment by Intelligence
Despite the heightened tension, Estonian intelligence does not anticipate any attacks from Russia on NATO countries in the upcoming year. This indicates that while the situation remains tense, the risk of open conflict is currently low.
