As the cold sets in, Ukrainians begin to actively stock up on firewood for heating their homes. However, it is important to remember that even dry branches, fallen trees, and other remnants of wood in the forest cannot be taken home without the appropriate permit.
Rules for Firewood Collection in Ukraine
In Ukraine, all forest resources, including dry trees, fallen trunks, and brushwood, are state property. This means that even if the wood is lying on the ground, it is not "ownerless" and taking it is prohibited. Violating this rule can result in fines and other penalties.
Fines and Responsibility
For illegal logging or damage to trees in the forest, the following fines are imposed:
- for the first violation — from 510 to 1020 hryvnias;
- for repeated violations within a year — from 1020 to 1530 hryvnias.
In addition to the fine, the offender is required to compensate for the damage caused to the forest. In cases of significant harm, criminal prosecution may even be possible.
Exceptions and Permits
According to current legislation, without a special permit, it is allowed to collect only mushrooms, berries, nuts, and wild plants in the forest. The collection of wood for heating purposes is prohibited. However, there are exceptions for areas where military operations are taking place or have taken place. In such areas, it is allowed to collect remnants of wood after logging for free, but only under established rules.
