On September 21, 2026, former presidential candidate Calin Georgescu was arrested in Romania on suspicion of fraud and creating an organized criminal group.
Circumstances of the Arrest
Georgescu was detained following an interrogation at the headquarters of DIICOT (Directorate for Investigating Organized Crime and Terrorism). Alongside him, businessman Ionel Rusen and an Italian citizen are also implicated in the case. This arrest is the result of a lengthy investigation that uncovered serious legal violations.

According to the investigation, in 2021, Georgescu and his associates allegedly formed a criminal group that operated in Romania and the United Kingdom. They posed as businessmen and representatives of foreign companies purportedly offering large loans. This led to significant financial losses for the victims of their fraudulent schemes.

During searches conducted as part of the investigation, the following items were seized:

The financial damages caused by these actions exceed 1.1 million euros. The prosecution has already filed a request for Georgescu's detention for 30 days, indicating the seriousness of the charges.
