The military leaders of 32 NATO countries have elected German General Karsten Breuer as the next chairman of the Alliance's Military Committee. The decision was made today, September 19, at a meeting in Copenhagen. Breuer will take over the highest military body of NATO in the summer of 2027, succeeding Admiral Giuseppe Cavò Dragone.
The Chairman of the Military Committee is the highest military official of NATO and the chief military advisor to the Secretary General of the Alliance. It is through him that the agreed recommendations of the military leaders of member states are conveyed to NATO's political leadership and military guidelines for strategic commands are formed. Breuer is currently the Inspector General of the Bundeswehr and heads the German armed forces.
The leadership of NATO's highest military body is passing to a representative of Germany amid the accelerated strengthening of European defense capabilities. At today's meeting, the Alliance specifically identified among its priorities the enhancement of air and missile defense, unmanned systems, cyber and space capabilities, and confirmed its continued support for Ukraine.
Breuer's election strengthens Germany's role in shaping NATO's military policy at a time when European states are taking on a greater share of responsibility for the defense of the continent and deterring Russia.
