According to a report by The New York Times, the Greenland agreement announced by Donald Trump grants the United States significantly less than he had hoped for. In social media, Trump claims that the deal provides the US with "permanent control over security and all other needs" in Greenland.
However, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen emphasized that the agreement recognizes Denmark's sovereignty and territorial integrity. This casts doubt on Trump's assertions of complete control over the island.
Previously, Trump has repeatedly expressed a desire to either buy or seize Greenland. In January, he noted that only the option of Greenland belonging to the United States would be acceptable to him.
Additionally, Trump claims that the agreement will allow the US to expand its military presence on the island. However, under the 1951 treaty, the US already has the right to establish and operate military bases in Greenland without any time limitations.
