American weapons manufacturer Lockheed Martin in collaboration with the US Army has successfully tested a new technology that could change the approach to using GMLRS rockets for the HIMARS system. This innovation allows for target coordinates to be adjusted after the shell has been launched, significantly enhancing its effectiveness.
Advantages of the New Technology
The introduction of this new technology could fundamentally alter combat tactics. The main advantages include:
- The ability to correct the target in real-time, increasing hit accuracy.
- Reduction of the risk of misfires, as the shell can be redirected to a different target.
- Increased operational efficiency, as changes can be made after launch.
Limitations on Technology Transfer
Despite the potential advantages, it is currently unlikely that this technology will be transferred to Ukraine or other US partners and allies. According to the Romanian publication Defense Romania, there are no plans at this time to supply the new shells with target correction capabilities.
