Hungary Plans to Abandon Russian Gas and Oil

Hungary is actively preparing to abandon imports of Russian gas and possibly oil. The country's Foreign Minister Anita Orban confirmed that Budapest will adhere to the deadline set by the European Union for abandoning Russian gas, which ends on September 30, 2027.

European Union Requirements

According to data from ACER, besides Hungary, this deadline applies to only two other EU countries – Slovakia and Greece. This indicates that most EU countries have already begun the process of diversifying their energy sources to reduce dependence on Russian energy resources.

Search for Alternative Sources

Additionally, Orban noted that Hungary is actively seeking alternative sources of oil. This is due to the fact that on November 21, 2026, the temporary exemption from US sanctions, which allows the purchase of oil from Russian companies Lukoil and Rosneft, will expire. After this, Budapest will need to find new supplies to avoid economic repercussions.
