Since the beginning of the year until August, the UK has recorded 340 drone incidents, which marks a significant increase compared to 250 cases in 2025 and 126 in 2024.
Experts believe that the rise in incidents indicates an increasing threat from Russia and Iran. The UK Ministry of Defence has not disclosed who is behind specific cases.
Former Defence Minister Tobias Ellwood stated that the country is not adequately protecting its military bases and critical infrastructure, pointing to the possibility of Russia using drones for reconnaissance and preparing attacks.
The UK government reports that security measures are being strengthened: in February, restricted airspace zones were established over 44 military sites, and this autumn, an additional 160 such zones are planned. Spending on drone countermeasures has also increased fourfold to £750 million.
