Moldova Establishes Protective Zones on the Border with Ukraine Due to Drone Threats

On October 8, 2026, Moldova announced the establishment of special protective zones along its border with Ukraine. This decision was made in response to the threat of drone attacks, as stated by the Minister of Internal Affairs of Moldova, Daniella Misaile-Nikitin.

New Shelters at Checkpoints

Construction of shelters for individuals is underway at the Moldovan-Ukrainian checkpoints (CPPs) to be used in case of a drone attack threat. This decision follows a recent incident on October 5, when a Russian drone injured a Moldovan border guard near the «Palanка» checkpoint.

Withdrawal of Personnel from Checkpoints in Ukraine

Additionally, Moldova has decided to withdraw its personnel from joint checkpoints located on Ukrainian territory. This concerns the «Kryva» and «Palanка» points. The authorities believe that such measures are necessary to ensure the safety of Moldovan citizens amid increasing threats.
