Russia Abandons Its Most Powerful Cruiser "Peter the Great"

The Russian Navy may lose its largest surface combatant, the cruiser TARKR "Peter the Great." A special commission has deemed its repair and modernization unfeasible due to severe wear.

Current Status of the Cruiser "Peter the Great"

A preliminary decision to decommission the vessel has already been made, as reported by TASS, citing the head of the All-Russian Movement for Fleet Support. The fate of the cruiser has been discussed before: back in 2023, there were talks about its decommissioning following the prolonged modernization of the similar "Admiral Nakhimov." However, in August 2025, information surfaced that "Peter the Great" might still be sent for repairs. Now, it seems those plans have been abandoned.

Military Capabilities and Significance

The cruiser "Peter the Great" serves as the flagship of the Northern Fleet and is the only remaining active cruiser of Project 1144 "Orlan." Its armament includes:

  • 20 anti-ship "Granite" missiles;
  • A crew of approximately 740 personnel.

If the ship is decommissioned, the only remaining Russian nuclear missile cruiser will be "Admiral Nakhimov," which, after nearly three decades of inactivity, resumed sea trials in 2025 following a major modernization that cost around $2.5 billion.

A Loss for the Russian Navy

This represents a significant loss for Russia, as two other cruisers of Project "Orlan" — "Admiral Ushakov" and "Admiral Lazarev" — have already been decommissioned. Currently, Moscow is unable to build new ships of this class.
