As of September 20, 2026, Russian attacks have significantly damaged Ukraine's railway infrastructure, with 312 facilities affected since the beginning of the year. In total, since the onset of the full-scale invasion, 567 facilities have been targeted, as reported by Ukraine's Minister of Restoration, Infrastructure, and Transport Mykola Kalashnyk.
Condition of Railway Infrastructure
According to Kalashnyk, about 20% of the facilities damaged in 2026 can be restored. The minister noted that Russian forces have focused their attacks on the railways, destroying:
- locomotives
- electric trains
- cars
These strikes have significantly impacted the country's transport infrastructure, complicating the transportation of goods and passengers.
Protection Measures
In response to these threats, Ukraine is enhancing the protection of its railway infrastructure. Specifically, mobile cover measures are being created, and individual facilities and routes are being secured. However, despite these measures, Russian troops continue to successfully strike railway targets.
NATO's Position
Meanwhile, NATO is preparing for possible escalations from Russia on the eastern flank. The chairman of the Alliance's military committee Giuseppe Cavo Dragone stated that NATO has troops, weapons, and ready plans in case of an attack. The Alliance has prepared approximately 4,000 pages of military plans covering various scenarios, from minor crises to full-scale attacks.
