On October 23, 2026, it became known that Russia has begun using a new budget missile called 'Filin' and a modified drone 'Geran-5', known as 'Geran-5 K5-K', in Ukraine. This information was announced by the advisor to the President of Ukraine on defense technology development Serhiy Beskrestnov.
Characteristics of the 'Filin' Missile
The 'Filin' missile is a low-cost product of Russian production. According to Ukrainian military intelligence, it has the following characteristics:
- Maximum speed: 800 km/h;
- Range: up to 1,200 km;
- Maximum flight altitude: 6,000 km;
- Capability to fly at very low altitudes;
- Versions with warheads of 50 and 100 kg.
The missile is launched from a ground-based launch system. It is equipped with a rocket engine of Russian production but contains dozens of components from American and Chinese manufacturers. Beskrestnov noted that Russia is focusing on cheap cruise missiles, which are faster and more maneuverable than Shahed drones.
Modification of the 'Geran-5 K5-K' Drone
The 'Geran-5 K5-K' drone has several key features that make it more effective compared to previous versions:
- Optical navigation system;
- Increased flight range;
- Enhanced speed;
- Increased flight altitude.
These innovations indicate that Russia continues to improve its technologies in the field of unmanned aerial vehicles and missile weapons, which could significantly impact the course of military actions in Ukraine.
