Russia Launches New Interference Campaign in US Elections

Russia has launched a new interference campaign in the US elections, according to The New York Times citing American intelligence. The Kremlin has sanctioned yet another online campaign ahead of the November midterm elections, aimed not so much at supporting a specific party but at sowing chaos and deepening political divides within American society.

To achieve this goal, artificial intelligence and fake videos are being used, disguised as materials from CNN, BBC, and The New York Times. In these fake materials, American politicians are accused of corruption, anti-Semitism, and other offenses.

The discovered materials are primarily directed against Democratic candidates in competitive districts. Among those targeted by the campaign are Senator Jon Ossoff and other candidates who could influence the balance of power in Congress.

One recent example is a fake video featuring actress Jamie Lee Curtis, who was falsely attributed with criticizing Democrats over their transgender policies. Her representative stated that there is “not a shred of truth” in the video. Despite this, the video garnered nearly 200,000 views on X.

Researchers at Graphika link this activity to the Russian operation known as “Matryoshka,” also referred to as Operation Overload. The same network previously spread fabricated materials ahead of elections in other countries.
