On October 6, 2026, President Volodymyr Zelensky chaired a Staff meeting where key defense issues were discussed, including the use of electronic warfare (EW) systems and the provision of long-range drones to the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU).
New Tasks for the Armed Forces and EW Manufacturers
During the meeting, additional tasks were defined for the AFU and EW manufacturers aimed at scaling the most effective approaches to counter Russian kamikaze drones known as “Shaheds”. These systems play a crucial role in protecting infrastructure and neutralizing enemy threats.
Technological Priorities and New Sanction Packages
A report from the Main Intelligence Directorate (GUR) regarding Russia's technological priorities for the coming years was presented. The discussion also covered the supply of critical components and equipment for weapons production to Russia. In this regard, Ukraine plans to prepare new sanction packages that will be submitted to the Cabinet of Ministers and the National Security and Defense Council.
Provision of Long-Range Drones to Ukrainian Forces
One of the key issues discussed at the Staff meeting was the provision of long-range drones to Ukrainian forces for the next year. The main criterion established is Ukraine's ability to mirror Russian strikes, emphasizing the importance of developing drone technologies and their integration into the defense strategy.
