The Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Ruslan Stefanchuk stated that he is ready to visit Berehove together with the Speaker of Hungary to find out whether the rights of the Hungarian minority in Ukraine are being violated.
Berehove is the de facto center of the Hungarian minority in Ukraine, where the highest percentage of ethnic Hungarians resides. Key cultural, educational, and religious institutions of the community are located here, including the Ferenc Rákóczi II Hungarian Institute.
In recent years, the main point of tension between Kyiv and Budapest has been language rights and education. Hungary insists on preserving full education in Hungarian in the schools of Berehove and the surrounding area, while Ukrainian legislation emphasizes the necessity of studying the state language in the regions.
