On September 27, 2026, residents of Teremky in Kyiv held a protest demanding the completion of a new heating pipeline. The residents fear that without this project, their homes could again be left without heat, as happened last winter.
Reasons for the Protest
Last winter, after the damage to TPP-5, temperatures in some homes dropped to +4 °C, and water in the pipes froze. This led to horrific conditions for residents, particularly for pensioners and people with disabilities, who were forced to use street toilets. Therefore, the new heating pipeline is critically important for ensuring heating in the area.
Conflict with Eco-Activists
The protesters faced opposition from unknown eco-activists and masked youths who are blocking the construction of the heating pipeline due to the cutting down of some trees. Interestingly, many of those protesting against the construction are not residents of Teremky and have come from other districts of Kyiv and the region. This raised questions among local residents about who organized this action and why it is taking place under the pretext of protecting trees.
Consequences for the Community
The construction of the new heating pipeline is necessary to avoid a repeat of the situation that occurred last winter. The following are at risk:
- 183 residential buildings;
- three hospitals;
- about 20 schools and kindergartens;
- over 200,000 residents of the Holosiivskyi district.
Residents are calling for the urgent completion of the project to ensure comfortable living conditions during the winter season.
