Testing a New Ebola Drug in the DRC

In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, testing of a new experimental drug Obeldesivir, developed by the American company Gilead Sciences, is underway. Over 250 people are participating in the trial, who may have been in contact with the Ebola virus.

Purpose of the Study

The main goal of this study is to determine whether the Obeldesivir drug can reduce the risk of developing Ebola fever after contact with infected individuals. Researchers are focusing on testing the drug against the Bundibugyo virus, one of the strains of the Ebola virus.

Participants in the Trial

The majority of participants in the study include:

  • local medical staff working with patients;
  • relatives of individuals who have been infected;
  • individuals who may have had contact with the sick.

Overall, the trial plans to involve one thousand people, which will allow for more accurate data on the drug's effectiveness.
