For the Popovych family, the war began on April 21, 2014, when on the day of Valentina Ivanivna's 50th birthday, her son received an urgent order to report for duty. This call changed their lives as Denys headed to Donetsk, where the first combat actions of the Russo-Ukrainian war were unfolding.
The Beginning of a Military Journey
Denys Popovych, a master of sports in swimming and practical shooting, became part of the front that became an inseparable part of his life. Initially, he served in the ATO zone, and later participated in the hottest spots of the full-scale war. Among the places where he served were:
- Bakhmut
- Pokrovsk
- Izyum
- Kurchyna
Denys always went where he was needed most, demonstrating courage and professionalism.
Tragic Death and Recognition
On May 23, 2026, while performing a combat mission in Donetsk, Denys Popovych was killed. He was only 42 years old. This loss was a heavy blow to his family, friends, and comrades. A month after his death, on June 22, Denys was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine with the Order of the "Golden Star", recognizing his bravery and dedication.
