Mykola Karpyuk spent over five years in a Russian prison. In 2014, he was abducted by Russian special services and sentenced to 22.5 years in prison on fabricated charges. During his imprisonment, Karpyuk suffered torture, but in September 2019, he returned to Ukraine as part of a prisoner exchange.
