US intelligence believes that Russia plans to interfere in the upcoming November Congressional elections. According to the New York Times, citing classified assessments, the Kremlin has approved a campaign to spread content on social media aimed at sowing or amplifying internal divisions during the elections.
While the assessments did not reveal evidence of attempts to influence the elections in a way that could threaten the voting process itself, experts have noted the presence of videos featuring Hollywood celebrities discussing the elections, created using artificial intelligence.
The disinformation campaign appears to be less extensive and coordinated than during previous election cycles. US intelligence agencies believe that Moscow is less interested in the midterm elections compared to presidential races.
The main goal of this Russian campaign is to sow chaos rather than support a specific party, although the materials analyzed in recent weeks contained calls to vote against Democrats in swing states.
