On October 23, 2026, it became known that the US is discussing a new peace plan for Ukraine. This plan includes the establishment of a demilitarized zone in Donbas and Ukraine's refusal to join NATO. In exchange, Kyiv is promised investments and the prospect of joining the European Union.
Conditions of the New Peace Plan
According to information provided by The Economist and Ukrainian officials, the main conditions of the new peace plan are as follows:
- Ukraine will refuse NATO membership;
- A demilitarized zone will be established in Donbas;
- Kyiv will receive investments and the possibility of joining the EU;
- Russia may receive sanctions relief;
- Restoration of Russia's relations with the West and new economic agreements with the US;
- Restoration of Russian gas supplies to Europe and the launch of the Nord Stream.
Prospects for Ukraine and Russia
This plan could be a significant step towards restoring stability in the region; however, its implementation raises many questions. Ukraine's refusal to join NATO may be seen as a compromise but could also provoke a negative reaction among the Ukrainian population, which supports European integration and security through NATO.
On the other hand, for Russia, the possibility of sanctions relief and the restoration of economic ties with the West could be a crucial factor in improving its economic situation, which has suffered from international restrictions.
