Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated in an interview with the Italian publication Corriere della Sera that elections are not the main issue for Ukrainian society at the moment. He emphasized that the priority remains to end the war and return to normal life.
Elections in Ukraine: Challenges and Opportunities
Zelensky noted that elections will take place, but organizing them during the war is complex. He stressed that military personnel on the front lines, Ukrainians abroad, and those within the country should have the opportunity to vote. However, he doubts the feasibility of holding open and democratic elections under the threat of Russian military actions:
- The need for 60 days of complete ceasefire to prepare for elections.
- Challenges in organizing elections under the threat of drones and missiles.
- Russia has rejected the ceasefire proposal.
The president also expressed concern that when Russians raise the issue of elections, they hope that a change of president in Ukraine would facilitate their objectives. He voiced apprehension that similar sentiments are echoed among American partners.
Energy Security and Cooperation with the USA
Zelensky also highlighted the importance of protecting Ukraine's energy sector. He stated that if the USA cannot stop Putin, they should assist Ukraine. The president emphasized that Ukraine supports a mutual energy ceasefire, but if Washington asks Kyiv not to respond to attacks, then the USA must provide missile defense systems to protect energy facilities:
- The necessity for missile defense systems to safeguard energy infrastructure.
- The importance of honest and transparent relations with the USA.
Zelensky also mentioned joint defense production with Italy and cooperation with the company Leonardo, underscoring the significance of international support amid the war.
