Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed an important point about the need to stop the Russo-Ukrainian war before artificial intelligence (AI) begins to make autonomous decisions in military operations. He made this statement during his speech at the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
The issue of autonomous weapons
Zelensky drew the world's attention to the fact that the pace of development of autonomous weapons raises serious concerns. He noted that if the war is not stopped, situations may arise as early as next year where AI could independently make decisions regarding military actions. In his opinion, this could lead to unpredictable consequences, as autonomous systems may not always be able to assess the humanitarian aspects of the conflict.
Call to the international community
The President of Ukraine urged the international community to critically analyze the development of technologies that could change the course of war. He emphasized the importance of taking measures to control the use of artificial intelligence for military purposes to avoid escalation of the conflict and threats to civilian populations. Zelensky stressed that peace is a priority, and achieving it should be at the center of global politics.
