Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed in an interview with Reuters that the country plans to close its financial deficit by the end of 2026, stating that there are still some issues that need to be addressed.
Plans to Close the Deficit
Zelensky mentioned that the government is working on the budget and international partner support, particularly from the European Union, to achieve this goal. He also noted that part of the funds from the loan planned for 2027 will be postponed closer to January 2027. These funds will be used to purchase drones for January and February 2027.
Funding and International Support
According to reports, to cover the defense budget deficit, which amounts to $27 billion, Kyiv, together with European partners, has developed a plan that includes:
- redistribution of Ukrainian funds;
- bilateral assistance;
- utilization of part of the €90 billion EU loan.
Peace Negotiations with Russia
In addition to financial matters, Zelensky also expressed willingness to meet with Vladimir Putin for peace talks during the G20 summit. He urged the U.S. not to believe in "illusions" that Russia would end the war after gaining control over Donbas.
