Scientists from the University of California, Riverside, have proposed a new hypothesis that Venus may have once had a moon that gradually spiraled inward and ultimately fell to its surface due to the planet's slow rotation.

The study, published in The Astrophysical Journal, revealed that Venus's gravity and its daily rotation would not allow a moon to remain in a stable orbit. Unlike the Moon, which is moving away from Earth, a moon of Venus would have been drawn closer until a collision occurred.

Modeling conducted as part of the research indicates that the larger the moon, the faster it would fall to the planet's surface. Such a collision could have significantly altered Venus's geology and climate, potentially destroying any oceans or conditions suitable for life.
